Chocolate Applesauce Cupcakes

1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 pinch salt
1 c. applesauce
1 1/2 c. flour
1/3 c. cocoa
1 1/2 tsp. apple pie spice
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. water

Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg, beat well. Add applesauce. Sift flour, cocoa and spice three times. Dissolve baking soda in water; add to other ingredients and mix well. Bake in greased muffin tins in 350 degree oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Yields 1 dozen.
