Chocolate Cake

2 sqs. unsweetened chocolate
1/2 c. boiling water
2 1/2 c. flour
1 1/3 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. salt
1/3 c. shortening
2/3 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
3 egg whites

Mix unsweetened chocolate in boiling water. Be sure it gets thick. Sift together all dry ingredients. Mix in shortening, milk and vanilla. Beat for 2 minutes. Add egg whites. Beat for 1 minute. Add chocolate paste and beat 1 more minute. Put in layer cake pans or 9 x 13 inch pan and bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes, or until done.
