Fudge Squares (cake)

1 c. sugar
2 tbsp. cocoa
1/4 c. butter
1 egg
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. unsifted flour
1 scant tsp. baking soda dissolved in 1/2 c. sour milk*
1/4 c. boiling water
1 tsp. vanilla

*To "sour" milk, add 1 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar or lemon juice to 1/2 cup milk. Let stand at room temperature 10-15 minutes or substitute buttermilk. Cream butter, add sugar and cocoa. Add egg, add sour milk and soda. Sift flour and salt together and add. Add boiling water and vanilla. Pour into greased and floured 10x15 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until done. 8-inch layer cake pan or loaf tin may be used.
